Sending your snaps just takes a few clicks

Images should be submitted by the end of Thursday August 10th.
If you have any trouble or questions that aren’t answered in the Frequently Asked Questions, or Rules sections below, simply email us at photographyawards@peelinstitute.org.uk

How-to-2-3-Format.jpg

Step 1
Check size

Make sure your images are no more than 15MB each. This should be fine for most images from a phone, and most from a higher end camera. And will be plenty for showing online. If you happen to win, or we’d like your shot for our exhibition, we may ask you if you have a higher resolution version.

Step 2
Email it

Email it to photographyawards@peelinstitute.org.uk
- Include your name and age category (Under 11, 12-18, 19-34, 35-65, Over 65s)
- Include the location the shot was taken if possible.
- Write a short sentence about your image (Especially if you’re reflecting the special Peel Prize theme of ‘Connection’)
- If your shot is part of a series, just write Series in the email.

Step 3
Check confirmation

We’ll send you a simple email confirming we’ve received it, and that it’s all fine. This should be within a few days, unless we’re lucky enough to get inundated with entries!
Pop back to have a look at the website from time to time to see if we’ve added yours to the gallery. But we’ll choose them at random, so don’t worry if you don’t see yours there!

Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t live in Clerkenwell, am I still eligible for this competition?

Definitely! Whilst this is primarily a local competition, you don’t actually have to live here. Your shots, though, should be taken here.

How many pictures can I submit?

You can submit up to 8 individual shots. You can also submit 2 series of shots (up to 4 in a series). So an absolute maximum of 16. That’s plenty!

When does it end?

The closing date for entries is August 10th. Judging will take place in August, with an exhibition and awards event planned for September.

Can I submit a print?

Whilst we’re big fans of proper printed shots, it makes judging very tricky. If you get selected for the exhibition, and want to print your own shot, that should be possible. If in doubt, email us at photographyawards@peelinstitute.org.uk

Are there restrictions on when a photo was taken for a competition?

No, there are no time-based restrictions concerning when a photo was taken.

I submitted my work to the competition, why don’t I see it in the Competition Gallery?

Every week, our editors look at competition submissions and select some for inclusion in our Competition Gallery and social media channels. These are curated selections, meaning only a small selection of photos entered are featured. These selections are not related to the final judging by our jury. If you do not see your photos featured, please do not worry—the judging for the competition will not start until after the deadline. That said, we are strong believers in curation. We simply can’t show every single entrant.

Are there restrictions if I’ve submitted a photo to a different competition?

No, there are no restrictions. You are free to submit photographs that you have submitted to different competitions.

Do I need to submit a model release with my portraits?

Good question, this can be tricky. The letter of the law says you should get a signed model release form, so this would be ideal. Images of children can be especially problematic, so if a photograph contains an image of a minor (person under the age of 18) then photographers will be required to submit a minor release form signed by the parent or legal
guardian of the minor before we can display it on our site or shown in our exhibition. Out of general courtesy, it’s always polite to ask people if it’s ok to take their picture.

Are there other ethical guidelines which should be followed?

Images that purport to be “news” photographs, reporting, photojournalism, or documentary photography, should comply with the ethical guidelines of the National Press Photographers Association in general, as well as those proposed by UNICEF for ethical reporting on children. No people or objects may be added, rearranged, reversed, distorted or removed from such photographs. If images are staged, this should be made clear in the written statements and captions. It is important, always, to take into account the ethical considerations of photography, and to protect vulnerable people from potential harm that could be inflicted as a result of publishing images that expose or identify individuals or groups who may be or may become vulnerable as a result of the publication of the photographs.

How is the Mentorship prize awarded?

This will both be chosen by the sponsor (Metro Imaging). They will select a shortlist from the entries and may ask to meet or see more work from the shortlisted people. They will first check if the people shortlist are actually interested in the prize itself, as it may not suit some people.

Can you explain the usage rights if I enter a competition?

I hereby authorise Clerkenwell Photography to display, print, and distribute in any manner any photographs that I have entered in this competition to conduct and promote Clerkenwell Photography competitions. Each photographer retains copyright of his or her images, and proper credit lines will be attributed to each photographer when used in any publicity of Clerkenwell Photography. This is a not-for-profit venture, so shots will only be used to promote the initiative itself.

If an entry is featured in the Competition Gallery or on social media, does it have any effect on the final judging?

No. Every week, our editors look at competition submissions and select some for inclusion in our Competition Gallery and social media channels. The jurors do not begin looking at work until after the competition deadline has passed. The jurors’ decision is independent of Clerkenwell Photography’s editorial selections.

How can I get more exposure for my competition submission?

It’s easy! Every entrant has the ability to share their entry via social media. We’d love it if you could help us promote it.

When are the prizes awarded, and will the winners get featured anywhere?

The judging will be completed sometime after the competition deadline and winners will be announced shortly thereafter. You will be notified via email during the judging process if you have been selected to receive a prize. We really hope we can put on an exhibition, where winners and runners up will be invited to a Private View. Winners will be featured in EC1 Echo.

If my entry is accepted and you are hosting an exhibition, what will you use for reproduction?

If your work is accepted, we will request the necessary reproduction materials at the time of organising the exhibition. If you’re showing a person prominently, we may also ask for proof that they’re happy for it to be shown.

If I have more questions, how do I contact you?

Simply email photographyawards@peelinstitute.org.uk
